Strategies for Effective Interviewing

Honing Your Segmentation Skills

Join us to sharpen your product design segmentation skills. We will go deep into four types of design questions and show a solid method.

About This Event

Many people have trouble segmenting users during a product design interview question. One reason is that some questions are vague about the industry or product space to explore. Without knowing the industry or product space, it is impossible to identify segments because unless you know both, you cannot find segments interested in the product you will build.

Therefore, you must first narrow down the industry and product space choices.

In general, there are four variants of the “design a new product” type questions that you could encounter in an interview. They depend on the level of specificity of the “industry” and “product” space mentioned in the question.

We will show you how to narrow the scope of the industry/problem space of the more open-ended questions and how to segment target audiences.

Pre-work

Please answer one or more of the product design questions below to maximise your learning.

Assume you are the CEO of a startup building the product and have a huge budget. Money is not an issue:

  • Design something for travel.
  • Design something for education.
  • Design a bottle of water.
  • Design something to help people find financial advisors.
  • Design a specific product type for a particular target audience.
